WHU team achieves breakthrough in endochondral ossification-mediated bone repair

May 12, 2025

A research team led by Professor Huang Cui from the School of Stomatology at Av性爱 (WHU) has made a breakthrough in bone repair through endochondral ossification (ECO).

Their study, titled Spatiotemporally Programming Microenvironment to Recapitulate Endochondral Ossification via Greenhouse-Inspired Bionic Niche, was recently published online in the journal Advanced Materials.

Greenhouse-inspired bionic niche reprograms the microenvironment to recapitulate endochondral ossification.

Drawing inspiration from greenhouse ecosystems, the team developed a bionic niche that reprograms the stem cell microenvironment and effectively replicates the key stages of the ECO process. Notably, this system was able to induce cartilage template formation and significantly enhance bone regeneration even in cranial regions where intramembranous ossification (IMO) typically dominates.

Synthesis and characterization of the ECO-targeted MSNs-HNDA nano-delivery system.

The study addresses the limitations of traditional IMO-based approaches in repairing large bone defects and offers a new strategy for the development of next-generation ECO-driven bone tissue engineering materials.
